Abdominal/possible urinary issue

Post a new topicby chestercat on Wed Apr 09, 2008 3:52 am

A year ago I was living in texas and I had been dating a girl for about a month. I had unprotected sex with her and within a week developed urinary pain. This pain didn't stay in one place. It would sometimes be at the tip of the penis, in the shaft, the base, the testes, the bladder, and even felt like kidneys. It would sometimes be a dull ache and other times very sharp pain in one small area like getting poked with a pin. I went to get it checked and they tested me for HIV hepatitis, gonhorrea, the clap, syphilis, etc and for urinary tract infection. They gave me an antibotic which they told me would treat for urinary tract infection and some STDs as a precaution. I took the antibiotics for 2 weeks but still had the pains that would migrate from spot to spot and would intensify at times and other times was a dull ache. I waited another week to see if the drugs needed time to work but trying to go to work and just enjoy normal life was difficult with this constant distraction. I did go out one night drinking with friends and came home and had very painful urination and I didn't even drink much. The tests came back all negative and I explained that I was still having issues.
I went back to the doctor and explained that not much has changed. They tested me again and again the test came back negative. By this point almost 2 months had gone by. The doctor referred me to a urologist the following month and a half later.
The urologist checked me out, did a prostate exam, and checked for typical signs of an infection or STD No red sores, no discharge, just the migrating pain and dull aches. He had more tests done which also came back negative and he prescribed me different antibiotics. He felt that my problem might be intestinal/digestive and scheduled me for an MRI scan of my abdomen which was to take place in 2 months and they would probably do a colonoscopy (I think that is the term for the scope exam of the colon). Oddly he didn't ask me to bring in a fecal sample to test, but I figured it was because he is a urologist
Unfortunately the job I had in texas lost a grant and I was let go. I moved back to my home town in Canada where finding work and going on job interviews became my priority. Also the pains had subsided and only occasionally did I get those migrating pains and aches. Which I thought might be it curing itself for some reason. Though I started noticing a pain appearing in my lower right of my abdomen just beside the pelvic bone. This pain was a dull ache that came and went but was always in the same spot. I started noticing that I could feel what seemed to me a hard tube when I pressed down and felt from sided to side on the area where it hurt. It seemed smooth but long that went from my lower pelvic region on my left side up to the top inside of my pelvis. I know the colon runs along there and was starting to think that my colon was bloated. Pushing down on it really hurt . I also began getting a lot of bloating and gas. I had people notice that I could go from a flat stomach to looking like I was pregnant within an hour. I felt pain during this bloating but it would subside upon passing gas. I am constipated often but occasionally have diarrhea.
I have tried to make an appointment with my family doctor but there is such a shortage of doctors in my hometown in Canada that I cant' get into see him for almost 6 months and there is talk that he is going to move and drop his patients. The wait to get a new doctor is 5-10 years. I am probably going to just go to emergency at the hospital if I can get in.
From my story I am curious if anyone has had similar issues or has an idea of what is going on with me. Apparently it's not an STD and doctors I have seen told me that I am not contagious. I was curious if I could have picked up a virus or parasite? It seems a coincidence that after sleeping with someone I get these pains within a week that occurred for a year and then developed this pain in my side as well. I can't seem to find anything on the web that is sexually transmitted that can cause this type of pains. I am worried that seeing more doctors and having them say that there isn't anything wrong with the tests means just months and months of returning to hear the same thing and no results. So I thought I would put it on here to see if at least I can get it narrowed down. I am hoping it isn't something horrible. Any ideas?

Hi there;

Like you, l was living in the USA and came home to find the desperate need for Dr.s is unreal and actually pretty scary. l went 2 yrs. without a family Dr. and when l first got back, l was in dire need to see a Dr. as l had lived in the USA without health care for 3 yrs and that was too long to go without being seen by a DR. especially , like you , when you know something is wrong and you cannot afford to walk into the ER without paying the bank the mortgage for your house first.

This is what l did, you go to the nearest Family clinic around,(bring a pad and pen) and if they say that they are not taking on new patients, then ask the secretary which Dr. on the list is taking on new patients and explain it is important that you are seen since you came home from living in the USA and you may be a carrier of something (that will now scare the secretary and she will then be talking to the other people there and they will discuss what they should do) that should speed up your case and say you would rather not discuss it in the open room and then if nothing turns out, go home get the phone book and start calling all clinics.

l am not sure what Province you have moved to, but let's say you are in Ontario, Quebec's waiting time is about 1 yr. if you consider the move just over the border. lf you are near Ottawa, near the border, and consider you want to move to Quebec to get a Dr. PM me and l can help you, l know of one dr. who is taking patients, but you have to have a Quebec health card and such to prove you are living here in order to be treated.

So, you think and let me know and all the best, Michelle

I've experienced this exact same situation, here in Canada. We tried anal sex for the first time, and about a week later, started getting symptoms. Got tested twice, once with a swab up the urethra, and both tests came back negative. I was given one dose of two types of meds after my first visit to the doc and that got rid of the itching and feeling like I had to pee, but general aching persisted. Reported that to the doc, who gave me the next test, but since that came back negative, no treatment was prescribed. I've read on the British Medical Journal site that sometimes the first dose doesn't fully work, and a second dose may help, but my doctor refused to take that action and wants more test. It's been over 2 months now, and now the sharp pain from time to time has started. Pretty frustrated. Have you heard anything new?
