Refractive error measurement

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Apr 01, 2002 7:44 am

Hello,
I am a 29 year old male and a regular computer user. About 1.5 years back I was diagnosed by an Optometrist as having myopia with -1.0 and -0.75(-0.5 cyl) for my RE and LE respectively. I am using eye glasses since then and recently I went for a check-up again to an Optometrist and the result was -1.0 and -1.0(-0.25 cyl). To re-confrim I went to an Opthalmologist and the doctor did a "wet refraction" test and the result was -0.5 and -0.5(-0.25 cyl)for my RE and LE respectively!
I have some fundamental questions:
1. Whose measurements should I believe in?
2. At my age is it possible to get myopia? If yes, is it possible that it will come down(as discovered by my Opthalmologist!) after regular usage of eye-glasses?
I have no other problems except for some CVS symptoms.
Thanks in advance.

You should believe both measurements. Your dry (without drops) refraction is a reflection of how you operate every day. Your wet refraction is what we get when we "inhibit" your natural focusing mechanism from work. In a sense, this is the true dioptric error of your eye, but it's not what you do in real life beacuse you don't walk around with drops in your eyes. I would only use your glasses as needed for distance only, nothing close up. And yes, you can get myopia at your age.
